Brexit explained as a submarine made of cheese
Hugo Rifkind:
“The thing is, the best way to understand Theresa May’s predicament is to imagine that 52 percent of Britain had voted that the government should build a submarine out of cheese.
Now, Theresa May was initially against building a submarine out of cheese, obviously.
Because it’s a completely insane thing to do.
However, in order to become PM, she had to pretend that she thought building a submarine out of cheese was fine and could totally work.
'Cheese means cheese,' she told us all, madly.
Then she actually built one.
It’s shit. Of course it is. For God’s sake, are you stupid? It’s a submarine built out of cheese.
So now, having built a shit cheese submarine, she has to put up with both Labour and Tory Brexiters insisting that a less shit cheese submarine could have been built.
They’re all lying, and they know it. So does everybody else. We've covered this already, I know, but it’s cheese and it’s a submarine. How good could it possibly be?
Only she can’t call them out on this. Because she has spent the past two years also lying, by pretending she really could build a decent submarine out of cheese.
So that’s where we are."

The Stream
Lost in forest
wandering alone
locked in dusk,
I came to a stream.
The stream came to me.
A gleaming flow rising.
Thirsty, I drank.
Compassion, kindness.
I followed its meanderings,
And it followed mine.
An uncertain dance,
through undiscovered lands,
sharing emptiness.
Miles slipped quietly into years.
Things not said,
things not asked.
Until I stumbled out
past the forest edge,
into the harsh light of knowing,
the need to say goodbye.
All so long ago,
yet the stream still flows,
through me.

To Build a Home ~ The Cinematic Orchestra
"Out in the garden where we planted the seeds
There is a tree as old as me
Branches were sewn by the color of green
Ground had arose and passed its knees
By the cracks of its skin I climbed to the top
I climbed the tree to see the world
When the gusts came around to blow me down
I held on as tightly as you held onto me
I held on as tightly as you held onto me"

Milky Way
"An all-sky view of our Milky Way and neighbouring galaxies, based on measurements of nearly 1.7 billion stars. The map shows the density of stars, observed by the Gaia space telescope. The two bright objects in the lower right are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. A wonderful afternoon on Burnaby Mountain. Just a few hours and lots of walking. A misty rain. First long run since CCC. Were it not for training there, CCC would have been impossible. The mountains know each other. Talk to one another. Know who's run what and where and when. And consider all that in deciding how things pan out on race day.

Knockin' On Heaven's Door ~ Bob Dylan
Heard this the other day and thought of you Tammy. This song always brings you to mind, though I don't know why. You and Chac. I hope you two are together somewhere, playing and training among the stars. One day Marilyn and I will get back to the Sault to look at your plaque.
Big Iron ~ Marty Robins
"There was forty feet between them
When they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the Ranger is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather 'fore a bullet fairly ripped
And the ranger's aim was deadly, with the big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip."

Cascade Crest 100M
Had a blast running CCC this weekend, with Gaby and Elisha crewing and pacing. Scott was there to see me off too. At 30 hours and 39 minutes it's my slowest 100 ever :) But it's my fifth CCC finish so I got a silver buckle (thanks Rich!). So much fun with such good friends. Could not have done it without them. Love and gratitude.

Crush Load
A medical emergency at Olympic Village required Translink to shut down one of the Canada Line tracks. The disembodied voice at the Broadway terminal warned that trains are at "crush load". That term actually exists: "In the context of transport economics and planning, crush load refers to the maximum level of passenger load for a particular vehicle or rail carriage. Crush loads are calculated for the number of passengers per unit area, standing up." (wikipedia.org). And so it was.

Such an excellent adventure, and lots of fun with Cary and Lori. I made it as far as Gold Stone Pass at mile 46 but missed the cutoff there. Big congrats to Cary for getting the job done. And big thanks to Lori for being such a great Sherpa.

Dale's Trail
Had a great day on Mt. Seymour working on Dale's Trail with the North Shore Mountain Bike Club ... nsride.com. A great group of people. I was the only non-biker among them :) Best trail volunteer lunch I can recall ... tuna salad wrap, frittata, carrot cake, hand-made granola bar, grapes :) And at the end of the build, beer at the trail head!

MEC Ambleside 50K
Perfect weather for this. Overcast and cool the whole run. My legs were heavy from the get-go ... lingering effects of the Mac 50K and Fittest 35K I think (especially the latter). It had about 6,500' of climb, much of it technical, but lots of runable sections too.
